Description

Alendronic acid is used to prevent bone loss (osteoporosis) that occurs in women after menopause, and helps to rebuild bone; to treat enlarged and misshapen bone (Paget’s disease of bone); to treat corticosteroid-induced weakness and brittleness of bones (osteoporosis) and to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis.

How it works

Alendronic acid belongs to class of medications called bisphosphonates. It acts by slowing bone breakdown process, increasing bone density (thickness), and decreasing the amount of calcium released from the bones into the blood.

Osteofos Tablet is used in the treatment, control, prevention, & improvement of the following diseases, conditions and symptoms:
  • Bone rebuilding
  • Corticosteroid induced osteoporosis
  • Paget’s disease

Osteofos Tablet improves the patient’s condition by performing the following functions on the body:

Osteofos Tablet Side Effects

Common side effects

Erythema, Oesophageal ulcers and erosions, Transient decreases in serum phosphate, Diarrhoea, Abdominal pain, Heartburn, Retrosternal pain, Oesophagitis, Dysphagia, Distension, Constipation, Musculoskeletal pain, Rash, Headache, Flatulence

Osteofos Tablet Interactions

Medicine and salt interactions may increase or decrease the activity of Osteofos Tablet when taken together with certain other medicines. Osteofos Tablet interacts with the following medicines and salts:

Missing a dose

In case you miss a dose, apply or consume a dose as soon as you notice. If you are close to the time for your next dose, wait until then and then consume or apply your medicine. Never consume or use extra medicine to make up for a dosage that you have missed. If you are regularly missing doses, consider setting an alarm or asking a family member to remind you. Please consult your doctor to discuss changes in schedule or a new schedule to make up for missed medicines, if you have missed too many doses in the recent past.

Overdosage of Osteofos Tablet

  • Never take more medicine than the prescribed dose. Eating more medicine will not improve your symptoms, rather they may cause poisoning or serious side effects. If you suspect that you or anyone else may have taken an overdose of Osteofos Tablet, please go to the emergency department of the closest hospital or nursing home. Carry the medicine box, container or label with you to help doctors with necessary information.
  • Never give your medicines to other people even if you know that they have the same condition or it seems that they have similar conditions. This may lead to overdosage or medicine poisoning.

    Do not take alendronic acid at bedtime or before getting up for the day.
    Take alendronic acid tablet after getting up for the day
    • before taking any food, drink, or other medicine
    • with plain water only (not with mineral water, milk, coffee, tea or juice).
    Do not crush or chew the tablet or allow it to dissolve in your mouth.
    After swallowing your alendronic acid tablet, wait at least 30 minutes before taking your first food, drink, or other medicine of the day, including antacids, calcium supplements and vitamins.
    Do not lie down
    • stay fully upright (sitting, standing or walking) for at least 30 minutes after swallowing the tablet.
    Do not start or continue the alendronic acid tablets if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to alendronic acid or any of the other ingredients of alendronic acid.
    Do not take alendronic acid tablets if you develop difficulty or pain upon swallowing, chest pain, or new or worsening heartburn.
    Avoid using alendronic acid if you have gum disease or have a planned dental extraction.
    Dental examination should be considered before taking alendronic acid tablets in case of any following conditions such as cancer, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, steroids, gum disease or having a habit of smoking (as it increases the risk of dental problems).

    Avoid taking alendronic acid with NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and paracetamol as it increases the gastrointestinal related side effects.
    Q. Does alendronic acid affect your teeth?
    Alendronic acid is not known to affect the teeth. However, bone damage in the jaw (osteonecrosis) generally associated with delayed healing and infection is known to occur following tooth extraction.
    Q. Does alendronic acid contain calcium/ vitamin D?
    Alendronic acid does not contain calcium and vitamin D.
    Q. Does alendronic acid cause cancer/ hair loss/ make you tired/ increase in blood pressure?
    Alendronic acid has a common side effect of causing hair loss. However, it is not known to cause cancer, tiredness or increase in blood pressure. Consult your doctor if you experience such side effects.

Storage of Osteofos Tablet

  • Store medicines at room temperature, away from heat and direct light. Do not freeze medicines unless the packaging or storage instructions clearly require you to do that. Keep medicines away from children and pets to prevent them from accidental consumption.
  • Do not flush medicines down the toilet or pour them into drainage unless specifically instructed to do so. Medicines discarded in this manner will enter the natural environment or be consumed by wildlife. This can cause irreparable environmental damage.
